Advice on Animal Models Graphics and Animation
As usual assume I know nothing and you won't be far from the truth.

I'm planning on creating like a African Savannah with Lions and Elephants Zebra etc.
I'm going to need quite a few models and lots of animations so I want to get a modelling - animation workflow sorted.

Clearly I'm not going to create them from scratch but use professional models as reference, I was thinking of buying this cat http://www.turbosquid.com/3d-models/maya...oth/690959
It looks a good model, its cheap its rigged (with controllers) But is 21,000 polys too big? for a PC game these days?
If it is what about this from the same artist: http://www.turbosquid.com/3d-models/elep...del/723032

But the first cat looks really nice to me perhaps if it is too big I could do some Lod thing?.

So roughly how many Polygons: for an animal 20,000 or 2,000 ?

Also I am thinking I should remove my wooden leg, let my parrot go free, take of my eye patch and go full honest "indie" and start using Blender!
But Maya and Motionbuilder are very nice tools. What do you think?

any advice greatly appreciated

Roy

RE: Advice on Animal Models Graphics and Animation
Well, he seems to have put 21.000 as the polygon count. So the triangle count will probably even be a lot higher.
21k triangles wouldn't be a big issue if you're only going to use a couple of animals in your scene; but his textures also seem to be pretty huge (4096..). So yeah, running into performance issues would be quite likely.
On top of that, the facial rigging seems to be quite advanced too. I have no idea how well that would import into Esenthel.

If you know how to model, you could always simplify the mesh of course.

Lastly, I use 3dsMax for school, but I think Blender is awesome! smile

Only use one or two of these cats within one large area and you will be fine. even with the large texture.
