Since I am working again with the Esenthel Engine, it was about time I created a toolset for 3D Studio Max 2012-2013-2014 which allowed some easy functionality with regards to exporting assets and animations.

Attached you will find the toolset that we use internally for exporting everything we need. It includes the following:

Dock

Undock

Close

Apply Keyframe Settings

Preview Animations

Export Model

Export Animations

Embed Media (When exporting a static asset, this is preferred)

Pivot Operations

X-ray Functionality

Object Dimensions

As always, drag and drop the .mse file into your viewport, and you are good to go
It's should supported with Esenthel because of allowed importing to 3DS Max, Maya, Blender, etc.

In the last few months I have been designing a custom toolset for 3D Studio Max 2012, and made it commercial. Though I never thought of adding engine specific tools to it, as I am only using a single engine. That has changed, and is also the reason why I post my tool here for show and interest.

The toolset we as SnowCloud Entertainment created is a complete package toolset which allows you to improve the workflow in 3D Studio Max greatly. Tools include but are not limited to:

Color Overrides

Pivot Operations

Stone / Rock Generator

Wooden Planks Generator

Physics Animations

Keyframed Physics Animations

Demolition Tool

Persistent Notes

Auto Save

Auto Back-ups and Manual Backups

Version Control System

Authentication System

Personal Information

WhiteBox Importer (HE)

Scene Analyzers

Esenthel Bone Renaming

... More

The tool was not intended to be used by other artists outside of our team, but we decided to release it as a commercial product a few months ago.

I got the idea of creating custom tools for Esenthel, well, because it is fairly easy with my team to make this. If you have any feature requests, then don't hesitate to tell me, and I will most likely add it to the tool.

My personal goal is to make this THE toolset artists will use, and I want to try and include as much as possible and organized on a Main usability and engine specific usability.

For more information about the tool, visit our Projects page here, and contact me if you are interested:

Wasn't sure where to put this but I just figured it might be helpful to know that you don't need a plugin to export skeletons and animation with Maya 2012. I got 2012 and the plugins aren't compatible with it so I figured I'd try it without one and it exported everything great (so far...hopefully it continues to do so lol). So I just wanted to pass along this little tidbit to everyone else.

1) Voxel sculpting allows you sculpt without any topological constraints and make complex details from nothing! You can change topology as you wish. This approach gives you an absolute feeling of freedom in sculpting. It is not based on surface deformation but on volume building and filling. Feel like a true artist here, don't think about polygons and structure, just express yourself as an artist! 3D-Coat V3 supports NVIDIA's CUDA™ technology which considerably accelerates volumetric sculpting performance.
2) Per pixel painting – fast and precise painting approach. Allows layered color and displacement painting over low-poly and high poly-meshes without initial geometry distortion. With this method you can paint directly on your mesh to a texture map, this is ideal for low-poly game assets. You can import a normalmap to use as a guide.
3) Improved retopology tools. New cap tool allows you to fill holes and finish retopologisation of tales or ends of fingers with just one click!
4) Improved interface. We present new professional customizable interface. Layout is broken on several separate rooms. Each room has own hotkeys set and dockable panels. You can easily store your interface layouts.

5) Improved UV-mapping tools. You can move/rotate/scale individual uv-islands, automatically or manually pack them.

6) Possibility to render your scene with antialiasing, depth of field, ambient occlusion and soft shadows.

7) Customizable scene background – you can use gradient, picture, panorama as a background. Reference image can be attached to any axis.
The full version of Softimage when it was owned by another company called Softimage (lol ) was used to create Half-Life 2 and the program has been used in several movies, my favorite one it was used in was the 300.

The scaled down version can export to .collada but has a polygon limit of 64000 polys. for games that's okay, in a model you may use like 6400 but not 64000. rendering is also restricted. It has documentation with it so tutorials and books aren't necessary, you just have to experiment. Besides, all the books that are out for softimage are out of date and there are almost no tutorials anyway. :E

Atangeo Team recently released Balancer 1.0,
which allows quickly and easily simplify 3D models.
It also features fast and effective triangle reordering to
speed up rendering by optimal utilization of GPU vertex cache.
Hope you will find Balancer useful.

From the press release:

Atangeo Balancer is a tool to optimize and simplify 3D models.

Its exceptional performance and a novel user interface allow finding
perfect balance between visual appearance and the number of polygons,
quickly and easily. Balancer utilizes a high quality polygon reduction
(aka mesh simplification or decimation) to preserve the visual
appearance of your model. The model features, normals, texture
coordinates, layer boundaries are all honored by Balancer. It can
optimize your models even further to dramatically speed up rendering
of your models. Balancer features a fast and efficient triangle
reordering that can be tuned for various rendering methods like
triangle strips and array/buffer based rendering.

Balancer Lite is a free version. It is fully functional but works with
small meshes only.
The limits for a single mesh are 15000 triangles and 10000 vertices.
Balancer Lite is a free version. It is fully functional but works with
small meshes only.
The limits for a single mesh are 15000 triangles and 10000 vertices.

Though not a free tool, Unwrap3d is an inexpensive program that not only offers great unwrapping/uv mapping options, but also works as a great 3d file format converter by using plugins. Includes Import/export plugins to convert to/from Esenthel's most used formats: obj, 3ds, x, ase, ogre xml, check the full list here:

http://www.unwrap3d.com/formats.aspx
Just tested all of them (except 3ds) in Esenthel's mesh editor and they all load fine.

Unwrap 3d comes in 2 versions/flavors SE (V2)US$49.95 /Pro (V3)US$59.95.
