Visual Studio 2015 needed on Windows
Just a small heads up, that the next release on Windows may be compatible only with VS 2015, older versions may no longer be supported because VS 2015 introduced some breaking changes, so I recommend that you download it soon.
Both "Community" and "Express for Desktop" editions should work.

Just out of curiosity, have you looked at Visual Studio Code? https://www.visualstudio.com/code-vs
It is still in development (with a preview release available), but it looks very interesting. Will this be supported too?

Nope, I haven't, I don't know much about it, my first impression is that's just an advanced text editor with some extra functionality?
Can it actually edit/compile C++ VS projects?

I just quickly installed it. Forget about it, it can't open projects, just single files.
