Are there any sorts of tutorials about how to work with the particle editor and create custom particles from scratch, for noobs?

It isn't so hard to use, just experiment with all the parameter values and I think you'll get it in a minutes :-)

In the middle of the top bar when in the Model Editor there is Particle.

I can create particle effects with meshes but I tried to play with setting them to other shapes (i.e. ball) and couldn't figure out how to get it to work. I got a single particle and it wouldn't even show up the color I set for it. So I'm kind of lost on how to use the particle editor to create your own custom particles. I don't understand what each of the settings are for, what they do, how to get the particles to form to the shape designated, etc. I'm a complete noob beginner with it. It seems to be the only editor that doesn't have any tutorials. :(
