RE: .max models
No, sorry, you could always ask someone to convert them for you, you also got alot of free modeling software you can use to model your own models for practice. : )
.max is Proprietary format of Autodesk. And as far as I know, there is no one able to make a pure converter for the format without 3DS MAX.

Not to mention legal problems etc.

RE: .max models
Also a few people use Milkshape(not free, dont remember), wings3d etc.
Now remember the free tools usually specialize in one thing, like 3D modelling, another for rigging etc. There is alot of sites that gives you lists of free tools etc to use.
Blender is extremely powerful but has a very steep learning curve.

UVLayout is a awesome UV Tool(texture layout mapping tool).
I just link it because I find it outclassing other solutions in terms of price and ease of use, not the least extremely powerful.
http://www.uvlayout.com/index.php?option...&Itemid=76

The link is to the price table just for fast reference.

RE: .max models
If you're a student you can get a 13 month license for 3DS Max for free.

http://students.autodesk.com/

I did this as well.
