Well there are some websites that can provide you with free models that you can use. There are some threads at this forum about free models and Google is your friend

Oh, I'd advice you to get Blender 2.5.3, not the 2.49 one.

why 253? what is the difference?

It's a beta version, but the interface has been completely redone.. Nearly everything, really.

Many people found the previous Blender versions quite hard to learn because of the interface; it should be much better since 2.5.

253 is more simple of 249?
