I have some flowing rivers branching off of calm lakes but there is an obvious broken line appearance between the lake and river due to the difference in motion. Is there a way to blend this easily so it looks more natural?

Maybe add some rocks near the river end - stones should mask the connection between water layers.
You can also experiment with foam/mist/splash particles to achieve similiar effect.
