I'm about to start working on a project that is a 3D side scroller.
The gameplay is bit similar as this game: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0jHu4GNYwwQ

But I have some questions before I start. So if you can see on the video, the game uses 2D animated sprites as characters/objects etc. (except the environment).

Now I like to do the same, because i'm are not good at animating characters in 3D. So i though il do the animations in 2D, but is this possible?
Because what i see in the documents is that its not really possible, only in the GUI.
