Subdivision of the support forum
Hi agian.
I'm browsing the forum a lot if i'm stuck on something and find that search doesn't always do a very great job at finding relevant results. Which is the case in a lot of forums (fora?).
I was wondering if it might be a good idea to subdivide the support part of the forum into different subsections, like rendering, physics and so on. Like the tutorials are devided, perhaps?
That way It could be much easier to navigate to the relevant posts if you're looking for something.
Regards,
yvan

RE: Subdivision of the support forum
I'm glad i'm not alone! I always find it a pitty that i ask for something that is probably already answered before, just because i cannot find the right topic. And by doing that keeping our noble engine developer busy with simple helpdesking and keeping him from the important things :-)

Not a bad idea...
However, instead of using the forum search, you can use Google. Just put "site:esenthel.com/community" (without quotes) in front of the keywords.

I think this'd be pretty good - especially seeing the ratio of posts in support in comparison to the other categories. You could stick all the current posts in something like "General Support" or "Other" to save having to iterate and classify 6,100 posts.

RE: Subdivision of the support forum
Since many people seemed interested in it, I've updated first post to make it a poll.
If you vote for YES, please post below your proposed sections, (like McTomas in above post)
Thanks

RE: Subdivision of the support forum
I voted yes and this is a possible solution:
- Back to Basics
- Help -> questions that don't fit in the other categories
- Physics
- GUI
- Artists & Content Creators -> artists, modellers, level designers
- Using EE in practice -> e.g code snippets or discussions about snippets
- Plugins -> e.g Hikari/raknet/Theora
- Tools -> ME/WE, questions about the EE tools or other tools that ppl want to use.
- Wrappers -> e.g .NET/LUA
- Ports e.g Mac/iphone
There is always evil somewhere, you just have to look for it properly.

RE: Subdivision of the support forum
Of course i voted yes, since it was my proposition :-)
Like I said before, if the subdivisions follow the tutorial topics closely, it is easy to decide in what subsection you should post. And also where to look for answers.
I don't like topics like 'beginners questions' because that is interpreted differently by everyone, and still doesn't say anything of what answers you'll find inside.
So here's my list:
- Graphics & Gui
- Network
- Math & Utilities (not sure about this title. This would be a place to ask about Memory containers, matrixes, threads, I/O and so on.)
- Sound (Might be very small, but at least the answers about sound don't get lost in a more general topic.)
- Animation
- Physics
- Rendering
- Mesh
- Shaders
- Game Basics (seems like a vague title, but if it contains questions and ideas about topics mentioned in the Game Basic tutorial section it might be very easy to find stuff. However, there will be some overlap with Animation, rendering and such.)
- Project Management
- General/Other

RE: Subdivision of the support forum
What about:
* 2D Rendering
* 3D Rendering
* Game mechanics (includes physics)
* Tools (to ask questions about how to use all of the provided tools)
* Programming (for question like: how do I extend this class?)

I voted yes, to your propositions I'll add:
-Questions
because in "Support" people ask questions not only about technical problems with engine

Right, licensing questions and general questions about the engine (why did you create this awesome thing?) need their own place.
